Another Gretzky Record?

The NHL’s ‘Greatest Of All Time’ Wayne Gretzky, continues to sets records even 20 plus years after he retired.

So what is it this time? This time it’s for having the third highest selling NHL jersey sold at auction.

Yes, it doesn’t sound that exciting until you realise that he’d already claimed the First position back in 2022 with his Edmonton Oilers jersey.

Defining Moments

Gretzky’s autographed New York Rangers jersey was auctioned by Grey Flannel Auctions last Sunday night, selling for $715,120 USD.

The No:99 jersey was the very same one that Gretzky would play his very last game (April 18 1999) and score his 2,857th and final NHL point of his career. No other player in the NHL has ever surpassed 2000 points.

Not even the great Czech forward Jaromír Jágr had beaten it. At the time of leaving the NHL, he was still 79 points shy of 2000 (1921).

Prior to the sale, Gretzky’s NY Rangers jersey had been displayed in the ‘Defining Moments’ Museum at Madison Square Garden between 2016 and 2019.

History made

The sale of Gretzky’s NY Rangers jersey also made it the highest sold US based hockey jersey in sports memorabilia history.

That previous title had been held by the famous Mike Eruzione ‘Miracle On Ice’ Jersey from 1980. The Eruzione jersey had previously sold at auction for $657,250 back in 2013.

Top Three

The Rangers’ jersey is Third Place in the list of most expensive NHL jerseys sold at auction.

Ahead of it is Paul Henderson’s Team Canada jersey which he wore during the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the USSR.

That fetched $1.275M USD at auction in 2010.

However, in first place is Gretzky’s very own Edmonton Oilers No:99 jersey.

The very jersey that Gretzky wore to help the Edmonton Oilers sweep the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals against Boston Bruins, sold for $1.452M back in June 2022.

The win would make the Oilers’ fourth Stanley Cup win in five years. Gretzky would score 12 goals, 31 assists across 19 games in the Playoffs. He’d also raise the Conn Smythe MVP Trophy.
